Jae Kim was born in Phnom Penh, the son of Korean migrant workers. His dad was a woodworker and his mom was a rice field laborer, and Jae lived with them until 1980 when they were both murdered by the Khmer Rouge guerrillas and he was sent by his uncle to live in a Taoist monastery in the Wudang Mountains of Hubei region of China.

- It is unknown as to whether Jae Kim's parents and uncle lived in the city or just the providence of Phnom Penh.

- Once known as the "Pearl of Asia" in the 1920s, Phnom Penh, is a significant global and domestic tourist destination for Cambodia. Phnom Penh is known for its traditional Khmer and French influenced architecture.
- The Khmer Rouge was the ruling political party of Cambodia — which it renamed to Democratic Kampuchea — from 1975 to 1979. It is remembered mainly for the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million people (estimates range from 850,000 to 3 million) under its regime, through execution, starvation and forced labor.
