In 1987, Jonas Bledsoe, then a Major, was re-assigned to Okinawa, where he saw China's increasing military strength and wrote a report called The New Nuclear Power was largely ignored until after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. Jonas stayed in Okinawa until 1990, when he was transferred to Fort McNair in Washington, DC.

  • The combined area of the known 32 US bases in Okinawa is 233 square kilometers, occupying 18% of the main "Okinawa Island". 75% of the United States Forces in Japan are located in the relatively small Okinawa prefecture. Okinawa Prefecture is Japan's southernmost prefecture, and consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 km long, which extends southwest from Kyūshū (the southwesternmost of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan.
  • The capital of the Okinawa Prefecture is Naha, which is located on Okinawa Island.
