About
NBC's Bionic Woman website gives some information about Ethan's life. As a political activist, Ethan Sommers received some public notoriety. One of his most notorious dealing is detailed in a Washington Post article, explaining how in 1970 he had spend four weeks in DC Jail having been accused of terrorism for orchestrating a sit-in in the US Capitol Building. The charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.
However, the notoriety he gained as an activist had a cost. Part of the price was that he was away from home for days or weeks at a time. His wife, Madeline Jo Sommers, was also an activist, and normally went with him in his travels, so the cost came when they had their first daughter, Jaime, in 1983. Jaime was born in their hometown of Van Horne, Iowa, and went to school there. When Ethan would return from one of their trips, he always brought back photographs of his travels for Jaime. These photos influenced Jaime's love for photography at a young age. His second daughter, Becca Sommers, was born in 1991 while he was marching in Washington, DC.
Ethan's and Madeline's line of work did not provide a large wealth for their family, and so along with school, his older daughter went to work doing neighborhood jobs. His younger daughter, Becca, went with him and his wife on many of their travels. When she was old enough, Jaime brought Becca to and from school.
In 2001, his wife Madeline was diagnosed with breast cancer. His older daughter, Jaime, postponed college to help to take care of her while he went away on business. But when she passed away in 2004, Jaime quickly left town after the funeral, deciding to start a new life in San Francisco. Ethan grew closer to his remaining daughter, Becca, until 2005 when she was caught hacking into a government database belonging to an organization he was protesting. Becca was only slightly penalized, but she was put on probation and prohibited from using a computer. A year later, Ethan took Becca to visit Jaime and left her there.
