About
According to NBC's official site, Becca Sommers was born in Washington, DC, while her parents Ethan and Madeline Jo Sommers, were there for a protest against police brutality. Madeline was rushed to the hospital while Ethan continued to march. That same night, the Mount Pleasant riot began and for Becca's first four days of life, chaos raged outside while she enjoyed calm in the maternity ward. Her parents believed the timing of her birth signaled she was destined to be a revolutionary, and while her older sister Jaime was left at home to attend school, Becca was brought to nationwide rallies and political events.
Becca quickly grew accustomed to eating at truck stops and sleeping in the backseat. Her earliest communications were with adults polarized by pressing political issues such as immigration and globalization. But since Becca did not accompany her parents to their late night political rallies, she spent much time alone in their hotel room learning how to use her father's laptop computer.
When she turned six years old, Becca returned full time to Van Horne, IA, to begin first grade and Jaime took the responsibility of transporting her to and from school. Unaccustomed to children her age, she started fights with boys, talked back to her teachers and remained inside on the computer while other children went to recess. In fourth grade, she was suspended for hacking into the school's mainframe and accessing personnel files. From then on, a monitor was required to supervise her while on the school's computer.
When Becca was nine, her mother was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. Jaime and her father tried to keep the news from her, but Becca knew when someone was lying to her. Now that her family was distracted, Becca began sneaking out of school to use the computers at the public library. There, she was exposed to hackers that promoted social anarchy. Her grades started getting worse, but her test scores kept her from doing poorly. Thus, her actions went unnoticed during the time of her mother's illness.
Madeline's death in 2004 devastated her family. Jaime suddenly took off for San Francisco, leaving Becca and Ethan by themselves. They grew closer as father and daughter until 2005, when Becca got caught hacking into a government database belonging to an organization her father was protesting. Her sentence was light, but she was placed on probation and prohibited from using a computer to access the web. A year later, Ethan took Becca to visit her sister, and left her on her on Jaime's doorstep with only a few belongings stuffed in a duffelbag. Jaime's apartment was already cramped, but she agreed to let her stay.

Trivia
- Mae Whitman was originally cast in the role but was subsequently replaced (and her scenes in the pilot episode refilmed) after series production was announced. The character was originally depicted as hearing-impaired, and resentful of her sister.
- Becca was originally supposed to be a year younger, born in 1992. However, the current bio shown on NBC's site gives her birthdate as "May 5, 1991". In fact, when Becca's bio was posted on 8/24/2007, Jaime's bio was not updated and conflicted, showing 1992 as Becca's birthyear.
